Chi Winder Homeless Centre
Temporary accommodation and training facilities for the homeless.
The Homeless Project has been designed and built to provide temporary accommodation for homeless people within the Redruth and Camborne area, alongside our client, Coastline Housing. It also provides support and training facilities to help homeless people rebuild their lives.
The building has been designed to fit within the world heritage mining site in which it is located. We used a simple pallet of materials found in the area; natural stone and profile metal sheeting which reflects the industrial backdrop. The unique mining heritage of the area inspired the design, and the backdrop of the site is the sculptural industrial structure of South Crofty mine shaft.
The main building has 18 en-suite bedrooms. A separate block has two four-bedroom houses designed to provide homeless people with facilities to move onto more independent or permanent accommodation. This centre is the first day and night facility in the county.
